Chapter 15

They gathered around the desk and stared at the blueprints.

Matt traced the outside of a mountain with a small entrance noted at the base. He turned the extra-large paper over and saw the plans for a warehouse inside the cryovault. The warehouse had a large opening—large enough for a bus—and gradually, the building led down.

“Holy shi—” Matt dropped the blueprint and took a step back. “Guys, this is it. These are the blueprints to the mountain, the warehouse, and the cryovault!”

“Does it say where?” Cody asked. “It’s gotta be nearby.”

Matt flipped a page. “No, not that I can see.”

“A-67 . . . is that what it’s called?” Catherine reached in front of Matt. “See, it’s on the top of every page. That must be what the site is called. A-67. And what’s this? Why are the words at the bottom blacked out?”

“We can’t see. You’re hogging all the light,” Cody said.

Matt and Cody huddled around her like she was holding the flashlight and telling a scary story.

“Look, the cryopod columns—this is what we saw in Dr. Westbrook’s videos.” Matt pointed. “So assuming this is cryovault A-67 . . . then we’re not alone.”

“Not alone?” Cody asked.

“I’m following ya. The truck said B-35.” Catherine twisted her thick curls into a knot behind her shoulders. “This blueprint is for cryovault A-67.”

“And the truck has B-35,” Matt interrupted.

“Exactly,” Catherine continued. “So we must’ve come from cryovault B-35.”

“For sure!” Matt punched the air.

“No way.” Cody shook his head.

“Yes way,” Matt said.

Catherine rummaged through a metal tray. “See this?” She held up a piece of letterhead. The top right corner had black marker with lines over it. “It’s redacted. Just like on the blueprints. They only do this for serious stuff, you guys.”

“Let’s not get ahead of ourselves.” Matt approached the bank of cabinets. “We are for sure onto something. We need to do a good search of this office and the others.”

On the back wall of the office were three robust steel closets. Matt yanked on the handle, and it barely budged.

Gears screeched off in the distance.

The ground tremored slightly.

Everyone paused.

Catherine gripped the edge of the door frame as if she were in an earthquake. Matt locked eyes with her before ducking under the desk.

“Ya’ll heard that, right?” Cody asked.

“Yeah.” Catherine nodded. “I hope it’s nothing. But maybe you should find a doorway or something.”

Matt felt his heartbeat in his ears.

Pound! Pound! Pound!

If it was another flash flood, they’d be trapped inside the hill. One way in, one way out. Drowned.

Like Kyle.

Matt knew he needed to Matt-itate, but finding anything to focus on seemed impossible. He swallowed hard. “Co-Cody, can you run out and see if anything is happening?”

“Ten-four,” Cody said.

Matt heard Cody’s footfalls become more distant. “Catherine, are you okay?”

“I should be asking you the same. This—whatever it is—is traumatizing. I can’t live in constant fear.”

“It’s just so, I don’t know, unpredictable.” Matt emerged from under the desk. “Sometimes it’s something, and other times it’s nothing. Or at least nothing here. Maybe the weather is bad far away.
